Captain Bob Breton has been running charters out of Venice, Florida since 2003 and has had the pleasure of sportfishing and diving in Florida’s Gulf and Atlantic waters for 20 years. Captain Bob believes safety is absolute and paramount. For this reason he has invested in neumerous additional saftey equipment and tracking systems for his 27′ Pro Sports ProCat.

Even in the worst imaginable conditions you can rest assured that there are resources aboard that are designed to alert the United States Coast Guard in the event of a tragedy on the water and report to them the exact location of the incident so they deploy ALL available resources for rescue. You should also note the boat is equipped with a USCG certified 8 man survival raft with food rations and provisions.

Captain Bob is also a registered member of Sea Tow and Boat US in the event of a mechanical malfunction and an immediate tow is necessary.

You can rest assured and fish in comfort knowing that Captain Bob and his first mate are there to assist in any and all situations that may arise.

Venice, Florida is located in Sarasota County and situated about an hour south of Tampa and an hour north of Naples. Venice is known for it’s beautiful sunsets, calm coastal waters, temperate climate, and access to world-class sport fishing.

So February 1st 2012 marks the end grouper Florida season. Grouper season closes for 2 months.
What will me and Capt. Bob put you on now you may ask?
Well, if you love fishing in Florida as much as Bob and I do,and the sound of screaming drag and the sight of a bent rod gets you excited as well as it does us, you need to fish with us these next 2 months.
Capt. Bob will put you on some monster Florida Amberjacks and all kinds of snapper- yellowtail, mangrove, lane, mutton, and if your lucky maybe a cubera!
We also catch a ton of blue porgy and Florida triggerfish on the wrecks and live bottom we fish.
Just because grouper season is closed does not mean that we will not be able to still fill the freezer!

Our Deep Sea Fishing Charters are limited to 6 persons (not to include the Captain and Mate) and range from 20-60 miles off-shore offering depths of 70 to 175 feet. We welcome private groups, corporate groups, partial groups, and individuals looking for a day of absolute excitement. How and Where We Fish in Florida:

We fish live bottom, wrecks, ledges, springs, and artificial reefs through out the year and also specialize in trolling for Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, and Sailfish. Bottom fishing in this region of Florida offers a wide variety of large game fish year-round.

Target Florida Fish:

We target bottom dwelling fish species such as Red, Black, and Gag Groupers in the 12 to 60 lb range; Mangrove, Red, Mutton, Lane, and Cuberra Snappers in the 6 to 40 lb range and wreck dwelling species like Greater Amberjack, Almico Jack, African Pompano, Permit, and Cobia.

The Hog Hunter

While out to sea on the Hog Hunter you can rest assured Capt. Bob has adequate fishing spots to produce Amberjack, Grouper, Snapper, and many other sought after game fishes of the Gulf of Mexico. These fish are powerful and ready for a fight, some exceeding 100 pounds.

Below is a list of fish most commonly caught on our full day adventures.

• Gag Grouper to 30 lbs
• Black Grouper to 25 lbs
• Red Grouper to 20 lbs
• Scamp to 15 lbs
• American Red Snapper to 20 lbs
• Mangrove Snapper to 11 lbs
• Yellowtail Snapper to 7 lbs
• Mutton Snapper to 15 lbs
• Greater Amberjack to 65 lbs
• Cobia to 40 lbs

While this list is of the most common species and sizes caught, keep in mind that we often catch Mahi Mahi (Dolphin fish), large Barracuda, several species of sharks, Bonito, African Pompano, Permit, and Tuna.

When booking your adventure, let us know what species you’d like to target as this determines which direction we head out of the pass in Venice. As you can imagine, the Gulf of Mexico is very large and the distance can be great between the location of species.

Cost per person for full day – $175.00 – 60+ miles offshore – license tackle and cleaning fish included

Cost Per Person for Half Day – $125.00 – 20+ miles offshore

Cost Per Person for night trips $175.00 40+ miles offshore.

florida gag grouper

Description: brownish gray in color with dark worm-like markings on sides; strong serrated spur at bottom margin of preopercle, less noticeable in large specimens; fins dark, with anal and caudal having white margin; often confused with black grouper; most noticeable differences are brassy spots on black grouper; tail of gag is slightly concave, black grouper’s tail is square; gag has white margin on anal and caudal fins, black does not; under 10 pounds, gag’s spur on preopercle is distnctive, where black is gently rounded

Similar fish: black grouper, M. bonaci
Where found: adults offshore over rocks and reefs; juveniles occur in seagrass beds inshore.

Size: common to 25 pounds

Remarks: forms spawning aggregations in water no shallower than 120 feet in Middle Grounds area, January through March; current research to identify similar aggregations off the Atlantic coast is ongoing; young gags are predominantly female, transforming into males as they grow larger; feeds on fish and squid

Red Grouper

Family Serranidae

Description: color brownish red; lining of mouth scarlet-orange; blotches on sides in unorganized pattern; second spine of dorsal fin longer than others; pectoral fins longer than pelvic fins; squared-off tail; margin of soft dorsal black with white at midfin; black dots around the eyes

Similar fish: nassau grouper, E. striatus

Where found: bottom dwelling fish associated with hard bottom; juveniles offshore along with adults greater than 6 years old; nearshore reefs

Size: common to 15 pounds

Remarks: spawns in April and May; prefer water temperatures between 66 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit; undergoes sex change, young indifiduals female, becoming male as they age, lifespan of at least 25 years; feeds on squid, crustaceans, and fish

Black Grouper

Family Serranidae

Description: olive or gray body coloration with black blotches and brassy spots; gently rounded preopercle

Similar fish: gag, M. microlepis; yellowfin grouper, M. venenosa

Where found: offshore species; adults associated with rocky bottoms, reefs, and dropoff walls in water over 60 feet deep; young may occur inshore in shallow water

Size: common to 40 pounds, may attain weights exceeding 100 pounds; no Florida record because of identity confusion with gag, which are mistakenly called “black grouper”

Remarks: spawns between May and August; protogynous hermaphrodites, young predominately female, transforming into males as they grow larger; larger individuals generally in greater depths; feeds on fish and squid.
